I have just started reading The Luminaries with absolutely no knowledge on reading Astrology Charts.

Reading multiple reviews about the book, people say that the novel is still very good without understanding the astrology involved, but being able to read them adds a whole new dimension to the characters. I was wondering if someone could help me in understanding the charts related to the characters. I'm one of the readers for whom the astrology went way over my head.
Book was ok, I struggled with it. It definitely took me longer than usual to read and it was mostly because of the Victorian era style of writing. It slows me down because it doesn't flow like modern prose.

Still a good story and interesting characters though, which is why I stuck with it despite the struggle and missing the entire element of the astrology. Aren't there chapter title like "Mercury in Capricorn" which an be googled to get something like "Those with Mercury in Capricorn engage with the physical world in a strong, purposeful way. Their minds are powerfully focused on the practical, nuts-and-bolts of life. Should be a few astrology symbols as well? Oh, I see.
I am sorry for posting this when I could have googled he chapter name directly. I never thought that the chapter name held such meaning. First chapter l in part 1 is "Mercury in Sagittarius Balfour begins to tell a story" and looking up "Mercury in Sagittarius" gives astrology things like truth-seeking, big picture, bluntness, etc. So can sort of connect characters, plot, story events and timeline, overall structure of book back to the astrology which in turn should reflect what sky was like when story takes place.

At least that was my attempt at interpreting the astrology aspect of the book. I read the book years ago while on a beach and didn't go too deep into trying to connect the all the astrology details. I see, I see. Considering you didn't pay a lot of attention to Astrology, did you still like the book? I'm not interested in astrology so I didn't pick up on it immediately, but if I remember right the charts at the beginning of each part show which characters you will follow and which characters they will interact with.

I tried to read this book awhile ago when you first recommended it, but it was such a slow go that I had to return it to the library before I could finish it. Because of its popularity, I was not allowed to renew it then. No it is definitely not above your ability astrology-wise. I found the astrology she used correct, but was not very impressed by the story. Maybe that is a matter of taste. These reviewers surely missed something — I guess you have to be an astrologer to see the meaning of astrology in this story..
It seems like most reviewers in this country just could not bring themselves to believe that she believes in astrology. I am very pleased that she came out about the astrology, she could have simply excised it. I found it overly long but I enjoyed the chinese puzzle aspect entertaining.
